Welcome to my detailed guide on the vapor return line in a fuel tank. In this article, I will explore the importance of the vapor return line, its function, and how it contributes to the overall efficiency and safety of a fuel system.
Vapour Return Line
The vapour return line is crucial in adequately functioning a fuel tank. It is designed to collect and recirculate the fuel vapours that evaporate from the tank due to temperature changes, vehicle movement, or fuel consumption. By capturing these vapours, the return line prevents their release into the environment, reducing harmful emissions.
The vapour return line connects the fuel pump to the fuel tank. It allows the vapour formed in the fuel pump to return to the fuel tank. At the same time, it permits access to fuel being pumped by the fuel pump to return to the fuel tank.
Why does vapour form in the fuel pump?
The vapour return line is installed on many cars having air conditioning. With air conditioning, under the hood temperature is likely to be higher, because the air conditioning condenser delivers more heat under the hood. Also, during idling, the engine cooling system does not work efficiently, increasing the under-the-hood temperature. This higher temperature tends to form vapour in the fuel pump.
There is one more reason for vapour formation in the fuel pump. When the pump is in operation, it alternately produces volume and pressure to suck the fuel in and force it out. When it produces a vacuum, the boiling or vaporizing temperature of the fuel goes down. The lower the pressure, the lower will be the boiling temperature. Thus, the combination of increased temperature and reduced pressure causes the fuel to vaporize in the fuel pump. This produces vapour lock, a condition that prevents the normal supply of fuel to the carburetor so that the engine will stop.
Therefore the vapour that forms in the fuel pump must be removed from there. Instead of removing them from the atmosphere, they are returned to the fuel tank by a vapour return line where they are condensed back into liquid fuel. The vapour return line also permits the excess fuel being pumped by the fuel pump to return to the fuel tank. The excess fuel in constant circulation keeps the fuel pump cool preventing the vapour formation.

Benefits of a vapor return line
A vapor return line helps to keep the fuel efficiency of your vehicle. Apart from that, this has several benefits-
- One of the primary benefits of a vapor return line is its positive impact on the environment.
- It prevents the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere, which are known to contribute to air pollution and the formation of smog.
- It improves fuel efficiency.
- Another significant benefit of the vapor return line is enhanced safety. By collecting and recirculating fuel vapours, it helps prevent the build-up of potentially explosive gases inside the fuel tank.
Conclusion
The vapour return line is a very good concept for keeping the environment safe and healthy. This line uses a recovery valve, return hose, and charcoal canister-type components.
