Different types of cars have different load capacity and size of the vehicle. But some vehicles need extra modification for their region and the location. A “tire selection guide” typically refers to recommendations or information that helps individuals or businesses choose the most suitable vehicle tires. This guide considers various factors such as the type of vehicle, driving conditions, climate, and specific performance requirements.

Tire Selection Guide

Different types of vehicles need different tires according to their specific loads and design. Tires are often categorized as summer, winter, or all-season. The guide may advise which type of tire is best suited for the predominant weather conditions in a particular region.

Tires come with tread patterns designed for different purposes, such as all-terrain, highway, or performance. The guide may explain the advantages of each type and help users choose based on their driving needs.

Every tire has its ratings for its specific vehicle. These ratings indicate the maximum load capacity and speed capabilities of a tire. The guide may offer insights into how to match these ratings with the vehicle’s requirements.

The selection of tire size and ply rating shall be decided from the highest individual load on the tire. The following procedure may be adopted for selecting tires in the case of different vehicles.

#1. Car Tires

The weight of a passenger car determining the load on the tires is made up of :

  1. The curb weight of the car (including water, fuel, oil, and the necessary accessories).
  2. The weight of the driver and the weight of the permissible number of passengers are calculated at 75 kg per person, including.
  3. The design and the chassis weight of the vehicle also determine the size of the tire.
  4. According to the design and the weight of the car tire also needs to adjust the requirement of the aerodynamics.
  5. The total weight of the body also depends on the size and the weight of the tire.

The maximum load for any individual tire shall not exceed the load specified at the inflation pressure for the tire size and ply rating. The inflation pressures for the various loads in the data tables represent the basic minimum pressures recommended for the best possible use of the tire. However, a change from the original equipment tire size/type, or inflation pressure should not be made without the consent of the car manufacturer.

#2. Truck/Bus Tires

In the case of truck or bus tires, the selection of tire is based on the highest individual load on the tire on an axle determined by the gross vehicle weight distribution. The maximum gross vehicle weight, which is the loaded weight specified by the manufacturer  for the completed vehicle shall include:

  1. The kerb weight.
  2. Driver and occupant weight for the designated seating
  3. Accessory weight and extra non-standard equipment
  4. Cargo load – for any uneven loading in the cargo area, the maximum cargo load must be reduced to prevent overloading of any
  5. Field modifications to provide additional capacity, reinforcement, etc. made by those other than the original vehicle manufacturer, if permitted.

The maximum load per tire shall not exceed the highest load specified at the maximum inflation pressure for a tire of that size and ply rating.

#3. Off-the-road Tires

In this case, the selection of tire is based on the highest individual wheel load as determined by GVW (gross vehicle weight) distribution, taking into account the load transfer. Maximum loads on individual tires are to be determined by the vehicle manufacturer’s rated GVW assigned to each axle and divided by the number of tires for that axle. The load per tire shall not be greater than that specified in the data table, which also gives the corresponding inflation pressure for a specified maximum speed of operation. The maximum GVW is to include :

  1. Net weight of the vehicle (with standard equipment including maximum capacity fuel, oil, coolant plus driver weight).
  2. Accessory weight, i.e. installed production items not covered under (1).
  3. Optional equipment weight,  i.e. the net weight of the additional items or not a replacement for standard items such as cab, body liners, sideboards,  etc.
  4. Special order modifications, such as additional reinforcements not covered under (2) and (3).
  5. Tyre ballast, 1f any used.
  6. Field modifications for additional capacity, reinforcement, etc., made by those other than the original vehicle manufacturer, if permissible.
  7. Payload, i.e. the total weight of the material being carried.

Conclusion on Tire Selection Guide

So the selection of the tire is as important as maintaining the engine. The car is the main component in which the car runs on the road. The size, diameter, and length of the tire also depend on the handling of the vehicle. So, check the article and read the all details about tire selection.

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ’S)

What is Kerb Weight?

Kerb weight, also known as curb weight, refers to the total weight of a vehicle when it is fully equipped with all standard items and fluids, such as motor oil, transmission fluid, coolant, and a full tank of fuel.

Why is choosing the right tire important?

Selecting the right tire is crucial because it directly influences your vehicle’s performance, safety, and fuel efficiency. Different tires are designed for various driving conditions and purposes.

What is the significance of the tire’s speed rating?

The speed rating indicates the maximum speed a tire can sustain safely. It’s essential to choose a tire with a speed rating that meets or exceeds your vehicle’s top speed capability.
