There are several causes of tire wear present in a vehicle. The tires are the important part of a car, that connects the whole car chassis to the road. In a vehicle, the tires are also used to absorb the road shock and also help to drive the vehicle on even the bumpy roads.
In this article, I will discuss the causes of tire wear. There are three types and situations where the tires get their life done, In this article, I will discuss those 3 situations where the tire wear occurs.
Causes of Tire Wear
The tire is designed to be operated at a certain pressure to the weight and characteristics of the vehicle. Every manufacturer recommends maintaining the correct tire pressure. Incorrect tire pressure causes overheating, rapid tire wear, and unsafe steering. If the tire pressure is correct then the tire wear will be reduced. So maintaining the tire wear means maintaining the tire wear.
High speed also causes the tire to wear and fail. When the vehicle is running at high speed, there will be a high temperature produced by the distortion of the tire. Such distortion can be reduced by increasing the air pressure four pounds above the normally recommended cold starting pressure.
So the tire wear depends on the three situations. These situations and the causes discussed in the following article,
#1. Abnormal Wear of Tires
Abnormal wear of tires may occur in different areas of trade, as follows.
- The front tire shows excessive wear only on one side of the trade. Check camber. If it is correct, wear must be ascribed to the habit of negotiating curves at high speeds.
- Tires show wear off particularly on both sides of the tread rather than on the center portion. Tires are inflated at a pressure lower than specified. Under such conditions, the trade side surfaces support most of the load, while the center portion is deflected upwards.
- Tires show wear on the trade center portion. Tires are inflated at a pressure higher than specified. Under such conditions, the tread center portion supports most of the load.
- Remarkable wear on the trade outer end of both wheels. Toe-out is the possible cause, check and adjust toe-in as required.
- Remarkable wear on the tread outer end of both front wheels. Excessive tor-in, correct to the specified value.
- One front tire shows wear on the tread inner end and the outer on the outer end. Steering is maladjusted and causes an excessive tor-in on one wheel and toe-out on the other.
Note – Check wheel alignment and see that steering and suspension components are not deformed especially that pit man arm. To ensure uniform wear of all tires, change wheels in criss-cross fashion every 5000 km.
#2. Normal Causes of Tire Wear
The normal causes of tire wear are –
- Incorrect inflation.
- Incorrect camber, caster, or toe-in.
- Excessive braking or violent acceleration.
- Worn steering mechanism.
- Worn king pins.
- Out-of-balance wheels.
- Misalignment of wheels.
- Overloading of the vehicle.
- Wrong loading marking.
- Defective brakes and brake pads.
- Toe-out incorrect on turns.
- Bleeding of air in the tire.
- Careless driving.
- Unequal tires on different wheels.
- Incorrect rotation of tires.
#3. Causes of Irregular Tire Wear
Irregular tire wear is the main reason for tire inflation and wear. So the causes of irregular tire wear are-
- Oval or eccentric brake drums, or a local increase in tire stiffness. The rapid wear will be caused due to it.
- Excessive wheel chamber or misalignment of the tire causes irregular tire wear.
- The toe-wear will cause the road to slip in one direction.
- Unbalancing, in special cases, may be due to maintaining a uniform or high speed.
The tires are an important component that connects the road to the vehicle. So, maintaining the wear of the tire is important to drive your vehicle on the road. The normal wear, incorrect wear, or the excessive wear can cause the vehicle to run unbalanced. So, check the tire regularly, if there are some irregularities then change the tire.
